Depression in teenage girls
Studies prove that every 1 out of every 10 teenage girl suffers from teen depression. This trend among teenage girls is more rampant than it is among teenage boys. There has been a rise in the cases of suicide of teen girls which is something that has to be addressed. Any case of teen depression with girls is really something to worry about only if five symptoms or more are seen continuously within a span of two weeks. If at all, in any doubt of the the number of symptoms that are showing, a specialist should be consulted.
The general symptoms that you can watch out for, in teen girls are:
1. Genetically Induced: If the family has a history of depression, then everyone who is directly blood related, will most probably face depression problems.
2. Obvious Uncomfortable Behavior with Peers: If the probable teen depressed victim is facing pressure, where it comes to behavior with her peer, then there is a good chance that she is suffering from depression. This is even worse when they are scared of being rejected or being mocked because if their behavior is not acceptable.
3. Affected by Traumatic Experiences: When young, one does not find it easy to deal with traumatic situations. And what’s worse is when they have such experiences, they do not have the inner strength and ability to shirk those memories off. All this negative energy and feelings, lead to severe depression.
4. Drug or Alcohol Abuse: Girls who indulge in drug and alcohol abuse, and who are addicted to such substances stand a greater chance of suffering from depression. As a result of their drug abuse, they develop differences in their home, school and social life which from where the depression starts.
5. Disorders that the Patient Suffers From: Other mental, physical, psychological disorders that the probable depression victim has could only add aggravate her depression.
The best advice that a parent can get for treating their teenage child for depression, is to go in for the process of psychotherapy, to fight depression.
One of the most seen reasons why teen girls get depressed is, because of social pressure. The best solution for depression induced by social pressure is to have someone really listen to the girl?s problems and issues, Not all parents are equipped enough, to really listen to the child to and understand problems so as to help her deal with her depression. Therapists are better equipped to handle such situations.
The use of medication is not advocated in cases with girls under 18 because is it known to induce suicidal thoughts. It is only a last resort option, when a doctor opts for it after psychotherapy fails to work.
